Animal Rights Malta
Lions for Gozo?!?! Or is it just a sick joke?
We refer to the news item "New animal association" of August 10 (The Malta Independent), where it was reported that a new animal association called Victoria Association for the Maximum Protection of Animals (VAMPA) has been formed with the intention, among other things, of bringing to Gozo endangered Asian Lions, with the supposed approval of the WWF.
We feel we should state from the outset that all true animal protection organisations would oppose such a project, which would be nothing but a commercial wildlife park under the guise of an animal protection society. Maximum protection of animals would require that wild animals do not end in captivity under the conservation excuse, which we have all heard enough times coming from zoos and other animal entertainment (enslavement) industries. If the Asian Lions that are mentioned are indeed in danger, then the sensible approach would be to protect them in their natural Asian habitat. To move them to a very small Mediterranean island would be to further endanger them and leave them stranded thousands of miles from their natural habitat. The claim of education is bizarre, Asian lions in European Gozo! who would be educated by that travesty of manipulation? The suggestion that Gozo was once the ‘natural habitat’ of these Lions defies credulity. We trust that MEPA and the Veterinary Services Department will not bow to any pressure from this organisation, and will never issue any permits for keeping wild animals in captivity in Malta or Gozo.We also suggest that if VAMPA wants to live up to its name, it trashes its plans for importing lions and start working on real animal protection issues. Please be assured that the true animal protection organisations of Malta & Gozo will unite and oppose this cruel exploitative proposal, just as they did to end Animal Circuses coming to Malta.Kenneth Cassar (Animal Rights Malta) and Michael Pearson (World Animal Conscience)
WWF contacted - know nothing about the supposed joint project
Animal Rights Malta has contacted WWF International to ask whether what VAMPA are saying about the supposedly collaboration of the WWF is true or not. WWF have unreservedly disassociated themselves from the whole project.
Is this all just a sick joke?
Further investigation by Animal Rights Malta has revealed that this new "animal society" could be nothing but a sick joke or a publicity stunt. Several factors show this possibility:There is a VAMPA organisation in Gozo, but this is just a fireworks organisation which works for the Santa Marija (Saint Mary) feast (14th and 15th August). A member of the Leone (Lion) Philarmonic Society is also a certain Mr Mario Gatt. Their website is www.leone.org.mt.So with all these coincidences, and with WWF disassociating themselves and denying any agreement with VAMPA, it is understood that this is all just a sick joke and a cheap publicity stunt. On the otherhand, in the interest of animals, we won't take any chances, and would like to make it clear that we would oppose such a project, were it truly planned.
